Just Bag It!

YouTube Video Contest

Plastic Reduction Heroes Video Contest

In our ongoing desire to make the world a better place, we need to share both our information and our concern to bring others along on our quest. This video should be a Show and Tell with a focus on yourself, your friends, your family, your community leaders or even strangers on the street – people who care about our overuse of single-use plastic products.

Video message – Use your video capabilities to tell your video viewers about someone (or lots of people) who care about the need to reduce the use of throw-away plastic bags (it’s ok if your person/people also talk about their concerns and actions concerning other single-use plastic containers as long as you don’t forget about plastic bags).

Present WHY they care about this issue, WHAT they do because of their concern, and WHAT they hope will come of their actions and concern. Remember, this is SHOW and TELL so don’t have as much of the talking head as video that SHOWS what they’re telling us about what they’re doing.

The winning strategy - Make your video come alive with the energy of your subject and the information you share. Leave your viewers moved to take their own action.

Video time limit – 30 seconds to 3 minutesWe need your help in creating videos that will inform and inspire others to see the need and make a change for the better.  Your passion, your creativity, and your ideas can make a difference.

Contest Resources and Theme

Why no single-use plastics?

  • Americans use over 380 billion polyethylene bags and wraps per year.
  • An estimated 100 billion of those bags are the free carry-out bags that have proliferated since their introduction in 1978.
  • An estimated 12 million barrels of oil are used to make these single-use plastics.
  • The amount of petroleum used to make one plastic bag would drive a car about 11 meters.
  • Factories around the world churned out a whopping 4-5 trillion of them in 2002, ranging from large trash bags to thick shopping totes to flimsy grocery sacks.
  • Americans throw away approximately 100 billion polyethylene shopping bags per year.
  • Of those, 1-2% are recycled.
  • It takes 1000 years for polyethylene bags to degrade/break down
  • Plastic bags don’t biodegrade, they photo-degrade, breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits contaminating soil and waterways. They then enter the food chain as animals ingest them.
  • Plastic bags clog both our solid waste facilities and storm drains.
  • Plastic is the largest source of ocean litter.
  • Ocean debris worldwide kills at least 1 million sea birds and 100,000 mammals each year, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association has estimated.
